Review for Holy Terror and Supernatural Season 9 So Far

Supernatural. Holy Terror Promotion Image. CW.

This week aired the mid season finale of Supernatural so I'm going to review the last episode and the season thus far. There will be spoilers and so if you haven't caught up you might want to skip this review. Last chance. Let's get into it.

Holy Terror got into the brewing Angel Civil war on Earth.  Though many people have figured the Zeke was really a bad angel they were proven both wrong and right. Zeke isn't a bad angels but is lying about who he is. He is Gadriel and angel who other hate because he was the one who let that snake into the garden.  So, we found out that.
Okay, let's back track a little. The brothers were going on a hunt for angels and not Zeke didn't want to be found out but they went anyway and they run into Cas trying to help the angels.  Zeke tries to stay away from old Cas but then Metatron shows up and makes his play. Metatron got bored up in heaven being alone and now wants to rebuild heaven with his chosen angels with him on top.  Cas is captured, which is what the fourth time this season. He manages to escape stealing an angels grace and he's an angel again. The civil war between the angels is brewing and two sides are wiping out any angel who doesn't choose a side. Cas calls Dean to warn him that Zeke died during the fall. Dean tries to cast out the angel out of his brother and that fails. Not Zeke kills Kevin per Metatron's order and leaves.
Despite my spars summary it was a good episode. The pace was good and it really moved the story line along. Cas got his hand dirty to escape and I'm sure it will open many more stories for Cas as he has to deals with that. Kevin's death was not expected but it fits, it's not just killing him for a shock it makes sense that Metatron wants him gone. Kevin might be the only one able to decipher the tablet with the spell. Gadriel's characterization is an interesting one, like Cas he wants to do good but seems to have to go down a dark path. Dean has been lying to everyone about Sam and a certain angel and it finally comes to bit him in the end. Overall the episode got a lot of story telling done and brought the hard emotions.  Overall I'd give the episode 4.8 out of 5.
Okay, let's talk about the season thus far. It's been pretty bad. Most of the episodes felt like fillers and didn't really add anything to the over arching plot. The Wizard of Oz episode with Charlie was a fun one but didn't help the over arching arc and that would be okay but most of the season had just trying to be fun episodes.
Dean's lying was just terrible. He told Sam all sorts of things and they were all very bad lies to cover for the angel in Sam. I mean when other characters call him on every single lie being unbelievable there is something wrong. Dean got not Zeke use his powers to bring back Charlie, Cas and Sam so many times. It felt really over used. It seemed like every other monster of the week managed to hurt Sam and even a few mentions that something was terribly wrong with Sam but he didn't seem to get it. It was just frustrating to watch really.
Kevin had some good development in this season. He got involved in the hunts  by gathering information in two episodes, I would like to see more of him though. His real highlights were some emotional moments with Dean, especially when Dean said he was family.
Cas as human was awkward at time but fun. We got to see Cas learning and trying to adjust. The last episode was a little awkward with him buying bear and everything but over all it did seem like he was fitting in. I'm almost a little sad to see it come to an end with him turning into an angel again.
Now the thing that really bugged me was Dean not letting go. Yes, I understand that he loves his brother and he thinks it's his duty to save him but still. Dean in the first episode saw that Sam had decided to die but pulled him back at the last moment. He trick his brother into saying yes to being possessed to save him. Let me remind you that he was only in that state because he wanted to stop him from closing the gates of hell that would have killed him. Now he's a puppet for an angel and he's killed Kevin. Dean ordered Not Zeke to save Charlie even though it meant it would take longer to heal Sam. After all the people he has lost and what they have died for you think he'd be a little more willing to let go but it's only made him cling to people more. I just figure Dean is going to try and keep him alive well into his 80s. When is Dean going to say enough is enough, I mean the codependence is getting too much. Is closing off hell not a good enough death? Dean hated letting his brother trap the devil but he allowed that. Dean just feels out of balance and relies to much on having Sam around. There needs to be adjustments here.
The Angel arc hasn't developed much or even the part with how Hells has been taken from Crowley. If you focused on the angels, hell, Zeke and Cas part you could put that all in four tight episodes, maybe five and still have some episode but most of it felt like unneeded fillers. Most of that were sprinkled in on the fillers and the episodes that focused on the arc episode were okay but that great.  Overall a few episodes have really been good but over all it's been at best average. I'd give this season so far 3 our of 5.
