Review for Steven Universe

Steven Universe. Cartoon Network. Warner Brothers.

This week came the premiere of Steven Universe. This cartoon has been much anticipated by the people of the internet. Much of anticipation come from Rebecca Sugar the creator of this new show best known for working on Adventure Time. Rebecca Sugar talented song writer and wrote the theme song for the show. The show is light hearted and has fans hopping for something great.
The show follows Steven Universe who seems like your average boy but is in fact a members of a team of intergalactic warriors, your didn't see that coming did you? All the members of the Crystal Gems have a crystal that grants them powers to use against their fights against evil and took protect the Earth. Steven is still trying to figure out how to activate his gem, one that he inherited from his mother that happens to be located in his belly button.

Steven is a fun loving easy going kid with a good heart. He is also very loyal and protective of others. Even without the use of his gem he still fights on and tries to protect the other Crystal Gems. His relationship to the other Crystal Gems seems to be more like little brother to older sisters.
Garnet is the unofficial leader of the group. She is a strong and discipline warrior who hardly speaks. Her weapon is a pair of golden gauntlets.
Amethyst is a wild child and gets along easily with Steven because of that. She is very carefree and loves to ear and sleep even though she doesn't actually need to. Her weapon is a whip.
Pearl is very smart and a bit of perfectionist.  Her weapon is a teal colored spear, physically she looks dainty like  ballerina but she is still a strong and efficient warrior. She is very outspoke and serves as the brains of the team. She cares deeply about Steven's safety which with monsters attacking all the time it's reasonable.
Greg Universe is Steven father and was in a relationship with Rose Quartz , Steven mother, before she gave up her physical form to bring Steven to the world. He is care free and works at a car wash after his music career didn't take off.  He deeply loves his son and still cares about Rose Quartz. He still wonders why a magical girl like Rose fell for him. He is nice guy but his life is kinda a mess as he lives in a van. He seems okay with it.
The setting is a basic urban fantasy with magical elements filtering in a normal world. The best example of this mix of worlds is the house/crystal palace that Steve lives in, which looks normal inside but is in a giant mystic temple. Even the warriors all see fairly like people you'd met despite themselves being magical.
Overall the premiere episode painted the series as a lighted hearted fun series. The characters are all lively and the episode was filled with jokes.  The show seems like a fun adventure animated show. It's still early on but it seems like the show is about fun instead of action which is refreshing with all the other action oriented shows on cartoon network. The show has plenty of musical number and they all get stuck in your head and you don't mind it because they're so fun. Out of 5 I give it 4.8 the main deduction is since it's a lot of set up in the first episode it felt a little slow at time and we haven't gotten to see all that it has to show so it left me wanting a little more.
