Review Pokémon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened

Pokemon. Promotional Art Work. Viz Media.

The 16th pokemon movie was aired and I'm going to review, since that's what I do. Last week game the release of another game so there is plenty of things happening for the Pokemon fan base including a sneak peek of the next season but that will have to wait for another review.
The story was deals with a group of Genesect revived through fossil and who find themselves in a world far different from what they remember.  Mewtwo runs into them and due to its past dealing with human experiments tries to help them. Still the for the most part don't trust it. The story ends up in a city like New York in a place like Central Park. Ash and Company end up in the middle of the fight between the pokemon and Ash tries to stop it and find a happy ending.

There is a lot of talk about this and let's start with Mewtwo, as many long time fans will remember Mewtwo first appeared in the first movie. Many fans were overjoyed to hear that Mewtwo would be back. That joy quickly turned into rage when they found out about drastic changes. This Mewtwo instead of having a deep mainly voice from the first movie fans heard a more feminine voice. Then Ash met this Mewtwo but Mewtwo didn't seem to recognize Ash. Mewtwo seemed very different lacking all the character development from the two films it appeared in, this sent fans in an outrage. Let me say I looked into this and it seems that this Mewtwo is a different Mewtwo. They share similar origins but are different. Ash did call Mewtwo by name so its seems that Ash recalls that he met a Mewtwo before but didn't go into. The most that was delved into the issue was that Ash was quickly to call it  Mewtwo and no one else had ever heard the name before. So don't worry fans the films haven't been retconned. I would have hopped that they would have made the difference more apparent though. Still this Mewtwo seemed to care more about pokemon than people and over the course of the movie seems to take on a lesson similar to the first Mewtwo's lesson. It did seem a little retelling of the first Mewtwo's story but there were some differences with how intense this one was and the mega evolution was a good twist. Still this Mewtwo seems less dark than the other one and more open to relationship even if just with Pokemon. I got a strong sense of a spiritual connection to nature from this Mewtwo so I found this Mewtwo intriguing.
The Genesect were interesting and I love dhow the anime made use of their unique looks and structure to do things that the games didn't. At one point one looked like a hover board and that probably made a lot of people want one in real life. The real charm was the voices, they made it clear of which was which and the character of the Genesect. The child sounding Genesect was certainly more innocent and emotional character. The commanding Genesect was focused and intimidating and the main antagonist for the movie whose goal was only the survival of its group. The other Genesect were a bit robotic sounds but that worked as for most of the movie they seemed to simply following orders.
The background was a treat, and I must say it looked wonderful. Without ever having gone to New York one could easily see the influences in the park and the city around it.  There was also a beautiful scene from above the Earth that was nothing short of artistic. The fights scenes were good and intense. One should also pay attention to the background characters as they help reenforce the message of the movie and how everyone has a place and we can all get along. The parts with the Feraligatr were a treat, it was defending their home and he was pretty kick butt.
The movie certainly had some emotional moments with how the kind Genesect simply wanted to go home. The voice acting here was marvelous that one can easily feel for the Genesect. Mewtwo's scenes were good too, it is trying to help pokemon developed through experiments like itself and it taken to extremes in the process.
The highlight of the movies is one of the final scenes with Mewtwo and the leader Genesect above the Earth. Watching the world from above the world realize that they share that world, they come from the same place and they don't need to fight. The scene looked out of painting and the acting really gave it  a quiet wisdom.
The movies didn't have anything overall grand and amazing. A lot of it did feel like it was covering the first movie and having a Mewtwo brings long times fans mind right back to it. The story was fairly average. The movie did have a few good emotional hits and the background were impressive. Overall I give this movie 3.5 out of 5, nothing too grand but it's good for a look.
