Review for the Premiere Of How I met Your Mother Season 9

How I met Your Mother. CBS

The premiere of the final season of 'How I Met Your Mother' aired September 23. With that premiere the final season gets underway at Barney and Robin's wedding. This last season was promised to take place at the wedding and finally introduce the mother.
In the two half hour episodes that aired most of the main characters have made it to the venue of the wedding and things are setting up for it. In any television wedding there are always a few expected tropes and one such is cold feet which was actually subverted. Barney the shows resident casanova has often been held as the least likely to get married in this episode was show how much he's developed in the series run. The premiere showed how much he thought about his brother's own marriage as being the sign that he too could have a functional marriage. Everyone expected his brother's divorce to bring that all that confidence down. Barney took it rather well as he was more concerned about his brother and was confident in his soon-to-be marriage. There are still some hints and foreshadowing that it won't be clear sailing all the way to the wedding.  Still it showed how he he's grown and is ready for marriage.

The subplot with Marshall becoming a judge and still not telling Lily even thought it threats to ruin their move is an on going subplot. The subplot is a mostly based on gags as Marshall struggles to get across the country and Lily gets drunk to cope with the fact Marshall might not make it in time. Overall the subplot is heavy on the jokes and not overly funny ones. They're good for a chuckle but not much more. Most of the plot is rather predictable. There seems to be no resolution in sight about the move and the new job until Marshall and Lily get into the same room.
Ted was his usual self through the premiere. Lily ended up taking the train instead of driving with him because he seemed extra annoying. For a moment it seemed like he had extra motivations to get her away but it turned out he was just being annoying. Ted continues to have little awareness about how his actions affect others taking detours to things he only find interesting instead of going to the wedding. This brings us to the wild card factor, the person who might set the wedding on it's side, and of course it's Ted. Ted is in the possession of a locket that Robin wanted as her something old for her wedding but failed to find. Now Ted has it and intends to give it to her, with admittedly slight hope, to win her back. This goes to show how little Ted grown through all the seasons and his constant regressions. At the first episode Ted fell in love with Robin and after several attempt at a relationship they both called it quits. Now Ted returns to win her heart, again and this time at her weeding. He was the one to push her to confront Barney and lead to their engagement but now Ted is trying to win the bride. Ted really needs to evaluate his actions and choices as he has tried it with Robin and they have both admitted it does not work between them and yet he's trying again. It is just getting frustrating watching him try and what's worse he's trying to stop a wedding between his friends. This would be the third wedding in the shows history Ted has either tried or succeeded in averting to try and win the bride over. On Ted's defense, he does know doing this to his friends is wrong but still believes, even a little bit, that Robin is the girl for him. Ted has decided to move so not to see his friends again and so they can be happy without his heart breaking seeing them together. Robin and Ted lasted had a conversation about their relationship two seasons ago when they agreed to they shouldn't be together yet for some reasons Ted slips back and tries to win her back. Ted's problems are the least interesting in the show since everyone knows it won't work and few a rooting for him to win Robing over. The premiere promises that at the end Ted will get over Robin when he meets the mother.
And that brings us to the mother herself, who after eight full seasons finally has some dialogue. On the way to the wedding the mother and Lily talk. The scenes show that she has many of the same annoying quirks as Ted. They also show that she has a playful teasing personality but is overall a kind and caring person. There is still a lot left unknown about her including her name. As of yet the writers are still teasing about the mother  and failed to even reveal her name.
Overall the premiere was less than what was hoped for. It promised a lot and it didn't deliver as much. Ted's lack of growth continues to drag the show down. The premiere tended to be overly jokey with poor pay offs. Still it was nice to see the progression with Barney and  Robin. The guest stars had small roles yet they delivered some of the biggest laughs. And the mother continues to be a mystery and one hopes that the final pay off will be worth the wait. Out of 5 the season premiere gets a 2.3 out of 5.
