Review for Space Dandy

Space Dandy. Square Enix. Funimation.

Two weeks ago was the premiere of the new Anime Space Dandy. The show focused on Space Dandy, a dandy guy in space, QT his robot and an alien cat whose kinda a pervert that they named Meow. Within the first two minutes it made it clear that this show is a comedy and shouldn't be taken seriously. Basically this is a fun anime set as a space opera that both plays homage as they parody it. I'll cover basically what I've gotten for the first two episodes.

There is a lot to love about the show. One of the things that sticks out is the art, each and every back ground alien is distinct. Each alien was designed by a different person so each alien would look different and alien.  The wide shots are wonderfully done giving it the grand feel that you'd expect from a space opera.
The characters are all unique and lively. Dandy is like Han Solo and Spike from Cow Boy Bebop with a little bit of Bobba Fett thrown in. QT is a cute robot but is a little outdated so its like having an old iPhone that just trying to keep up. Meow well her's pervert. Meow is possibly one of the more reasonable characters in the show but that's not saying much. This unlikely trio doesn't seem to think anything through and this just leads to all the humor and action.
A great deal of the shows charm comes from the satire and parody they do. The first few lines are about bobbies and Dandy goes on about how you can't judge a woman by her breast size, he says that their bootie is what you should judge them by.  A great deal of the humor in this show comes from breaking down the usual tropes and cliches that fans have come yo expect. They even poke a little fun at everyday life, in the second episodes they had some fun with the idea of posting every time you go some place.
With only two shows out I can't say that every character is well developed and we know almost nothing of the supporting cast. Honey the guys usual waitress seems like she has a bright personality but a little bit of a ditz.  Scarlet is possibly the only one who actually knows what they are doing in this show. Scarlet also knows how to kick butt if she needs to. The fact we don't know much about her actually works in her favor as it makes her seem mysterious and people want to see more of her. As for the main bad guy of the series, the Gogol Empire,  haven't actually come face to face with Dandy and they seem as competent as he is.
I've been watching the english dub, which somehow got onto the air waves even before the Japanese dub, and i must say I'm liking their choices for voice actors. They all have unique voices and really bring out the characters quirks and personalities. They really bring a certain lively quality to the characters.
Despite being a comedy the show has a few moments of touching stories. The whole noodle story with the noodle making alien's background was actually touching without feeling out of place in this show.
The real gem of this show is that it doesn't take itself seriously. The show is just about having fun and watching it Saturday night is a real treat. The art and backgrounds are all made by amazing artists and just a joy to watch. The characters are all fun and you root for them. This a show that is just meant to make you laugh and smile and I think it does that. It gives a small explanation of the science in the show but two-seconds later openly ignores and that works for this show. There are a few things that might annoy some people like the fan service, which they openly mock,  and the whole super nova thing and sometimes the show doesn't really seem to be trying to make sense. Still this show is actually a great laugh and fun to watch I give it a 4.8 out of 5.
